Order of the Maunche
Maunche (OM) - Induction into the Order of the Maunche is done by Their Majesties, usually at the recommendation if the rest of the members of the Order, for exceptional display of talent and knowledge in one of the A&S categories, or for passing knowledge in several categories.
Anyone can write a letter of recommendation for a person to become a Maunche, but the letter is given to the members of the Order first, so that they can decide if the person displays the skill and knowledge. Their Majesties still have the right to override the Order's decision, but that is unlikely and rare. That is why the scrolls read something to the effect of "by the acclaim of the Order", and by being a Polling Order, it's considered a special honor to be inducted into it.
Members of the Maunche can put the letters "OM" (short for "Order of the Maunche") behind their names, and they are allowed to wear the Maunche badge in some form, usually a medallion, but I've seen rings and earrings as well. An alternate spelling is "Manche", so you may see that as well; it means the same thing. It is the Middle French word for "sleeve", which refers to the old practice of a woman removing a detachable sleeve from her bodice to give to a knight to wear as her special favor on the list field. Later on favors became special pieces of cloth that ladies would embroider for a particular knight, but the Maunche badge still shows the shape of the original sleeve - no, it's not an "M" for Maunche! :-)
